Chinese state media called President Donald Trump and other U.S. government officials hypocrites for how they are handling the George Floyd protests compared to their reaction to protests in Hong Kong last year.

CNN reports that Chinese propaganda is pointing out how the U.S. often sided with anti-government Hong Kong protesters, who took to the streets and sometimes caused violence. Now, they say Trump is calling those protesting the death of a black man by a white police officer “thugs.”

Chinese officials are bringing attention to the president’s change in attitude toward protesters all over social media. Chinese media reports also say Beijing has not publicly come out to support the violent protests taking place across the U.S.

On Saturday, a spokeswoman for China’s foreign ministry Hua Chunying, tweeted, "I can't breathe.” The statement was the last words spoken by Floyd before he died. The quote was followed by a statement by the U.S. State Department on Hong Kong spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus, “This is a pivotal moment for the world. It will go down in history. Freedom loving people around the world must stand with the rule of law and hold to account the Chinese Communist Party, which has flagrantly broken its promises to the people of Hong Kong.”

Hua also posted photos and videos from Hong Kong protests and an article by RT, the Russian state-run broadcaster, which accused the U.S. of hypocrisy for its reaction to the two protests.

Hu Xijin, editor of the nationalist Chinese tabloid the Global Times, posted a picture of riots from a CNN article and wrote on Twitter that "the 'beautiful sight' defined by US politicians has eventually extended from Hong Kong to the US."

"Now they can witness it by their home windows," Hu wrote. "I want to ask Speaker Pelosi and Secretary Pompeo: Should Beijing support protests in the US, like you glorified rioters in Hong Kong?"

Hu posted a video in English on Sunday where he said some people in China have cheered the Floyd protests “because the U.S. government and U.S. Congress supported the riots in Hong Kong."

"However, the Chinese government has not shown any support for the riots in the U.S., I hope that Americans notice Beijing's restraint. We have not tried to kick the U.S. while it is down," he said. "There are of course different reasons for the riots, but their similarities are overwhelming: they all defy the law, subvert order, and are destructive. Burning police stations, blocking roads, smashing shops, and destroying public facilities in Minneapolis and other places are exactly the same violence in the Hong Kong demonstrations."
