Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo. and chair of the House GOP Conference, on Sunday tore into Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., for her years-long claims of Native American ancestry, suggesting she ought to be disbarred for declaring her ethnicity as an American Indian on a Texas State Bar card.

In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Cheney, said Warren, who announced her White House candidacy on Saturday, “made herself a laughing stock.”

“I don't think anybody should be surprised that that's been the reaction to her and to her continued claims,” Cheney said.  “And we saw just last week that she said she was a Native American on her application for membership in at least one state bar association. One wonders whether or not that's grounds for disbarment. I'd say it probably is grounds for disbarment.”

“She's made herself a laughing stock. I think the longer that she's out there, the more that people are going to be talking about this. And it's just clear that she is somebody who can't be trusted.”

Cheney would not directly address President Donald Trump’s tweet directed at Warren that appeared to mock the “Trail of Tears,in which Native Americans were forcibly relocated from their homes to reservations in Oklahoma in the 1800s. Thousands died from disease, starvation and exposure along the way.
