Stephen Bannon reportedly would mull a White House bid in 2020 if President Donald Trump is not in the race — but Trump confidante Roger Stone scoffed at the notion as "ludicrous," The Daily Caller reported.

Vanity Fair's Gabriel Sherman reported late last month the former White House chief strategist believes a run is a realistic possibility — privately giving Trump only a 30 percent chance of serving out his term.

"The idea of Steve Bannon as a candidate for president in 2020 is ludicrous," Stone told The Daily Caller in an interview posted Thursday.

Stone told the outlet he is among those who believe Bannon's motive for talking with Michael Wolff for his explosive new book on the administration was spurred by the Breitbart chairman's own presidential ambitions.

"I just don't think he's a viable candidate," Stone told The Daily Caller. "The voters don't know who Steve Bannon is, and they don't care."

In Wolff's book, "Fire and Fury" — whose release date has been pushed up to Friday — Bannon unloaded on Trump and his children, including suggestion Donald Trump Jr.'s meeting with a Russian lawyer offering information on then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was "treasonous."

Stone believes Bannon's comments were likely spurred on by "pique" with Trump for being summarily fired, and called the statements "disappointing," The Daily Caller reported.
