Former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe did not rule out a run for president in the 2020 presidential elections, telling MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell on Monday that "I don't think anyone should rule anything out in life."

However, McAuliffe emphasized he did not "think any Democrat ought to say they're running in 2020. I think they ought to work their heart and soul out to win the House and Senate [in the midterms], help state and local and pick up these governors."

He said the importance of the upcoming elections this November could not be overstated and said his party "has spent too much time worrying about the president, and we forgot about state and local. We have 36 governors up this year. These governors elected this year will in the chair in 2021" when all the new congressional district maps that have been gerrymandered by Republicans in previous years can be changed.

He also stressed the important work that governors can do by citing his own record.

"I vetoed 120 bills, the most of any governor in Virginia history, anti-women, anti-LGBT, anti-environment, pro-gun, and anti-voting rights," McAuliffe said. "Had I not been seated in the chair, they would be law today. You're not going to bring 21st businesses in when you alienate folks. Open and welcome. That's the democratic message."
