Conway: Trump to Meet With Senate, House Leaders on 2018 Agenda

By    |   Tuesday, 02 January 2018 10:35 AM

President Donald Trump will meet with House and Senate leaders this week to discuss his agenda for 2018, and that should be seen as a "very positive development," presidential counselor Kellyanne Conway said Tuesday.

"I know that the big four are set to meet this week with our OMB [Office of Management and Budget] Mick Mulvaney, with our director of Legislative Affairs, Mark Short," Conway told Fox News' "Fox and Friends" program.

The "big four," House Speaker Paul Ryan, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer will be involved in the White House meeting scheduled for Wednesday.

This weekend, Trump will meet with Ryan and McConnell at Camp David to "continue that discussion about a robust agenda for 2018," Conway said.

"I think America should look at this as a very positive development," said Conway. "We hope and let me make clear again on behalf of the president, we want Democratic support for these measures. We wanted it on middle-class tax cuts and we wanted it to improve access and availability and affordability of healthcare."

The president worked during the holiday break, and he continues to work with leaders in both chambers and in both parties, she also said.

Meanwhile, 60 votes are needed in the Senate to pass the government's spending bill by Jan. 19, and Conway said the administration knows that many Democrats who are up for reelection come from states Trump carried in 2016.

In five of those states, Conway said, Trump carried the vote by double digit margins, and she hopes such Democrats would be able to say they cast their votes without allowing "the petty partisan politics to get in the way."

Conway said she believes 2017 was "a disappointment" when it came to bipartisan action.

"We had a lot of bipartisan talk and a president who always had that olive branch extended," said Conway. "He had them at the White House, had them on the phone, went up to Capitol Hill and and certainly listened to their concerns."

However, the president has made it "very clear" that there will be no deals on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, unless there is funding for the border wall.

"This president is so accessible and so transparent on these policy prescriptions," she said. "He tweets about them almost daily, if not daily, including over his break  and so everybody knows where he stands on this. We hope they can come together for the good of the country. He's ready."
