Japan has the technical ability and resources to rapidly assemble a nuclear arsenal in perhaps as little as six months, nuclear proliferation experts say.
Analysts say that due to its reliance on nuclear-generated power, Japan has huge stockpiles of plutonium — 9.8 metric tons of it, with another 37.1 metric tons stored in Britain and France. Experts say that's enough to make around 5,000 nuclear bombs — although it would probably need far fewer for deterrence.
