Pundits and pols throughout the Garden State have begun warning that the U.S. Senate race between longtime New Jersey Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez and GOP challenger Bob Hugin may turn out to be a shocker.

In August, a much-respected Quinnipiac Poll showed Menendez leading Hugin by a slim 43 percent to 37 percent margin. Then on Monday a Stockton University poll showed Hugin trailing by just 2 percent among likely voters -- well within the poll’s 4.25 percent margin of error.
