Mixed messages on how Joe Biden will address Venezuela’s socialist regime have foreign relations experts concerned that the country’s humanitarian crisis will only continue and perhaps worsen. While President Donald Trump stood up to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, foreign experts are worried that Biden won’t be able to do the same thing, despite Maduro grabbing through a fraudulent election.
President Donald Trump helped create a coalition of countries to oppose Maduro by backing opposition leader Juan Guaido as the country’s leader and imposing sanctions. But following a largely fraudulent election orchestrated by Maduro, Guaido’s position has weakened and Maduro’s has strengthened as he took control of the National Assembly. The new legislative body consists mostly of members of the ruling socialist party including Maduro’s son, Nicolas Maduro Guerra, and his wife, Cilia Flores.
