Random thoughts on the mainstream media’s feeding frenzy over Melania Trump’s speech.
As day one of the RNC Convention was coming to a close, the partisan mainstream media hacks went into full, gloating attack mode as they tore into Melania Trump. They’d been frustrated all evening because opening day for the convention had gone very well. The theme was “Make America Safe Again,” something badly need after eight years of the great American unraveling courtesy of Barack Obama.
Throughout the evening, a number of amazing men and women delivered powerful, heartfelt, pro-American speeches. Military heroes like Marcus Luttrell and Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, “America’s Mayor” Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Sheriff David Clarke, who reminded us all that “blue lives matter.” It was a night dedicated to pro-America, pro-military, pro-police messages. Everything that the left loves to hate.
These speeches followed some minor drama when the Republican anti-Trump insurgent rabble went down in flames on the floor of the Quicken Loans Arena. This was something on which the left had invested great expectations. And as the evening unfolded, things just got worse and worse for them. Chris Matthews, Don Lemon, et al., were in a serious funk.
And then a pro-Clinton pundit discerned some similarities between Michelle’s and Melania’s speeches. Suddenly it was Christmas morning for the media. Glum turned to glee and the long knives quickly came out.
About Melania’s speech. It was terrific and heartfelt, delivered by a beautiful woman of great poise whose first language is not English. It was a huge stage for anyone, particularly for an immigrant who is not a political person.
Out of a speech lasting over 15 minutes, a couple of lines sounded very close to what Michelle Obama said in her 2008 Democratic Party convention speech. The lines are hardly trademarkable, but whatever. Never let a scandal go to waste, Rahm Emmanuel tells us. Even if you have to make it up.
Not that this blip has legs, but, to borrow another phrase from the Obama’s, this is a “teachable moment.” Because, eight years after Michelle’s Obama delivered the words in question, we now have the benefit of hindsight. What is sadly apparent is that for Michelle, they were just a series of empty, meaningless words. Tell ’em what they want to hear.
For example, the phrase “You work hard for what you want.” Please. This are the “you didn’t build that” Obamas who believe in hard work about as much as Hillary believes in securing her classified email. This is the cradle-to-grave social welfare state Administration that is busy destroying the fulltime work week with Obamacare, that has loaded almost 50 million Americans on food stamps, all while running the national debt up to almost $20 trillion.
Or the phrase “Your word is your bond.” Really? Even the fawning media know that coming from the Obamas, this one is a laugher. Let’s see, “if you like your healthcare plan, you can keep your healthcare plan.” “If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor.” Or ISIS is the JV and al Qaida is on the run. Or if Assad uses chemical weapons that would be a big fat redline. There are many, many more, but the Newsmax editors maintain a strict word count leash.
There was one phrase that Michelle did believe in her 2008 speech. A perception of America that Melania, or any conservative for that matter, would never even think, much less say. “And let me tell you something. For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country.” You know, because for the Obamas, America is a nasty, biased, racist nation. This has been the north star of Obama’s policy, the driving force behind his promise to “fundamentally transform the United States of America.”
In stark contrast to Michelle, Melania stated that in her opinion, becoming an American citizen is “The greatest privilege on planet Earth.” Amen, sister, amen.
