Mike Pence was the victor in the one and only (thank you Jesus) vice presidential debate, squaring off against a snarky, petulant Tim Kaine.
Pence kept his composure for 90 minutes, weathering some 70 (that’s not a misprint) interruptions by his opponent. In our short flash-to-bang news cycle, Pence was declared the winner, even on CNN.
But the fact is, Kaine arrived in Farmville, Va. with a totally different set of objectives.
At first blush, one may wonder how Kaine, who has been a governor, a senator and by all accounts is a smart guy, was seemingly incapable of elevating himself beyond that of a surly 10th grader (with apologies to 10th graders everywhere).
Was he nervous? Over coached? Inhaling helium? Too much white powder?
Actually, this is team Clinton’s strategy, indeed it is the strategy of today’s left.
Progressives aren’t interested in debating issues. Their entire strategy is to shut down debate. Climate change? The science is settled, if you disagree you’re just stupid.
Combating Islamic extremism and securing our borders? Shut up, bigot. Obamacare is a mess? You’re a racist! Hillary’s guilty of a massive email national security breach? You hate women, don’t you?
If you’re a conservative thinker who (if allowed) happens to venture onto a college campus, you’ll be shouted down by students and faculty who haven’t already decamped to their safe spaces.
Trump supporter? "Deplorable!"
Kaine’s sole objective in the debate, was to, well, not debate. Look at it that way and he was a resounding success. Yeah, he came off looking downright creepy, but hey, he largely kept Mike Pence from delivering a cogent thought for 90 minutes. Well done Timmy! This is what taking one for the team looks like.
In the military this tactic is called a diversion, the Democratic Party has mastered it.
Because liberalism is indefensible. There is no way Clinton can run successfully on four more years of Obama’s dirty diaper results, much less her record. Besides it is so much more effective to rant about Trump’s latest Tweet, or to screech about his decades-old tax returns.
The media is all too happy to tote those pails of Kool-Aid.
Interrupt. Shout down. Get rude. Deflect. That’s the Progressive game plan. Pence, patient gentleman that he is, easily won the battle of vice presidential candidates.
But Kaine and the left weren’t there to debate.
When political discourse is quashed, the biggest loser is the American public.
