Our American Flag is a symbol of national unity and love for America.
The premise that Old Glory stands for racism or any other evil practice is an abhorrent lie.
While it's important to acknowledge the horrible stain of racism in our history so that we can learn from our mistakes, it's a grevious error for hate peddlers to distort history, while stoking racial divisions and hatred for their own personal benefit.
Let's remember that the first martyr of the American Revolution was a Black man: Crispus Attucks; he was the first victim killed during the Boston Massacre of 1770.
Some will correctly point out that John Adams defended the five British soldiers involved in the killings, what many Americans need to remember is that Adams’ cousin, Samuel Adams, took charge in arranging a funeral procession for Crispus Attucks to Boston’s Faneuil Hall, where Attucks lay in state for three days.
Approximately 12,000 people (more than half of Boston’s population at the time) participated in that funeral procession.
Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and James Madison took steps to oppose slavery in Virginia before the Revolutionary War.
The original version of the Declaration of Independence included a rebuke of slavery.
Sadly, the final document avoided the issue due to opposition from some states.
The United States lost 2.5% of its population with over 750,000 casualties during the Civil War so that our nation could finally rid itself of the evil of slavery.
The American Flag was flown proudly in every battle against those who sought to preserve slavery. Our American Flag is now under direct and brutal assault from some of the most powerful individuals and institutions in our country.
Attacking the American Flag has nothing to do with redressing the evils of racism, or any other evil.
This newfound strategy of brazenly lying about the Stars and Stripes is wicked and venal but is also a brilliant weapon being used to rip apart the America that we know and love.
America is still known as a place of and for hope.
Yet, those who would attack the flag seek only a nation of misery; a nation replete with anger, mistrust, and hatred.
Rage peddlers rail against our flag, while horrified by Ronald Reagan’s vision of America as a "Shining City on a Hill."
Judge for yourself. And while your evaluating, do your own research on those proffering obscenely false attacks about what our American Flag stands for and what we celebrate on Independence Day.
Thus, evaluate carefully the hateful, divisive rhetoric you may hear (and see) daily.
Such persons' vision for America is no a shining city on a hill — on which Americans are indifferent to race and ethnicity and are united for the common good.
No, those assaulting Independence Day and disrespecting the American Flag imagine a much different country. They much prefer a nation that is a reiteration of a war-torn former Yugoslavia.
They actually thrive off historical transgressions both real and imagined.
Anyone permanently living here claiming to be alarmed, frightened, or agitated by the sight of American flags, probably identifies as a "global citizen" far more "enlightened" (read privileged) than those just loyal to the United States of America.
This viewpoint and its accompanying arguments are all about superiority.
How could they just be Americans? They are way too good for just America.
Alternatively, those unnerved by the sight of an American flag might also just be emotionally disturbed individuals. Perhaps it's best to treat them with empathy.
Chances are that they need someone to convervse with, so they can air what's really bothering them.
America is not an exclusive club, anyone born here is automatically a member, and there are several other ways to join. We are One Nation Under God, we are not (as some opportunists would hope) a geographically scattered collection of warring clans striving for dominance against each other based on race or ethnicity.
Our flag remains a national symbol of unity.
We can and should disagree vociferously and heatedly about public policy disagreements.
For example, let the "Keynesians" and "Monetarists" have at it out in the public arena, and in the court of public opinion.
Support or oppose universal health care? Fight for your ideas.
But in the United States there should be no room for hatred of each other built on historical lies. Our Pledge of Allegiance is not about ideological purity tests.
We pledge allegiance to the flag as a recognition and celebration of our freedoms.
We do not pledge to have the same opinion about issues, we do not pledge our loyalty to policies or individuals.
We don't pledge as a way of promising to vote a certain way or support one party over the other. We pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America as a way of affirming our loyalty to our country, one which we should all love regardless of politics!
