While we can’t be certain of it, one has to think that somewhere (probably in the United Arab Emirates) Muhammad Saeed al-Sahhaf is watching the Biden administration press briefings on Afghanistan in utter disbelief.

At times, he must be in amazement with the preposterous declarations of victory by Biden administration officials, I think it’s safe to say that listening to General Milley discussing working with the Taliban to fight terrorism might have been too much for al-Sahhaf to endure.

If watching General Milley discussion of the Taliban didn’t offend al-Sahhaf's sensibilities, hearing White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki deny that Americans were stranded in Afghanistan must have made his head spin.

After all, al-Sahhaf must have thought, government propaganda is one thing, but offering up such demonstrably false information as fact should be roundly condemned.

Muhammad Saeed al-Sahhaf, far better known as “Baghdad Bob” in most of the world, rose to prominence during the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

As Iraqi Information Minister. Al-Sahhaf achieved fame for his colorful press briefings during the war, which regularly featured outrageous and patently untrue pronouncements of epic Iraqi military victories against the advancing allied forces.

He famously claimed that American forces were “slaughtered” at the Saddam International Airport (now Baghdad International Airport) and that American soldiers were nowhere near the capital of Baghdad, even as he and the reporters could hear the ferocious engagement going on during the press conference.

However, not even “Baghdad Bob” could have dreamed up the ridiculous and degrading victory lap in progress by the Biden administration.

Just like “Baghdad Bob” couldn’t hide the truth from the world, the Biden Administration’s “creative” messaging on the withdrawal, can’t do a single thing to hide the reality of the devastation in Afghanistan.

Americans know that we have been defeated in a horrific fashion with devastating consequences not only for the people of Afghanistan but for the safety of Americans all over the world especially here in the United States.

A recent Rasmussen Poll finds that 52% of Americans think President Biden should resign over his handling of Afghanistan.

Indeed, 57% of unaffiliated voters and 24% of Democrat voters rate Biden’s handling of Afghanistan as “poor”.

The disaster in Afghanistan is because of extreme almost historically unprecedented incompetence by the team assembled by Joe Biden.

The Biden administration had long ago planned to pull out of Afghanistan, while they knew that the Taliban was making major military advances, they thought they had enough time to withdraw American troops before the complete collapse of the Afghan government.

Considering the now infamous conversation between President Biden and Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani toward the end of July, Biden did not conceive that the Afghan government would collapse in months, let alone weeks, after their conversation.

According to a report by Reuters, Biden told Ghani that “we are going to continue to fight hard, diplomatically, politically, economically, to make sure your government not only survives, but is sustained and grows.” So, what happened?

We need to recognize some painful, humbling, and embarrassing facts about the situation in Afghanistan.

By the time the Afghan government fell in mid-August, the United States was at the mercy of the Taliban.

In the beginning of July 2021, there were roughly only 600 U.S. troops in Afghanistan and the withdrawal was almost complete. Fast forward a month later, the Taliban are in control of the entire country.

The only leverage the United States had is a new military offensive that the Taliban knew the Biden folks wouldn’t dare attempt. That is why the U.S. decided to leave hundreds of American citizens and thousands of loyal Afghans behind at the mercy of the Taliban.

That is also why the U.S. government left behind $85 billion in military equipment making the Taliban one of the most formidable military forces in the world overnight; terrorists now have more Black Hawk helicopters than 85% of the rest of the countries in the world.

Panic, fear, and helplessness is why the United States was not able to secure sophisticated military equipment that may fall into the hands of our enemies.

All of this explains why the U.S. government has been so conciliatory toward the Taliban in recent weeks and why there was no real American response to 13 of our brave heroic service members making the ultimate sacrifice in a suicide bombing carried out by terrorists at the Kabul Airport.

Terrorists thrive and attack when governments are gripped by incompetence, fear and a general reluctance to admit that evil exists in the world.

It is time for the Biden administration to realize the severity of the tragedy they created and they dangerous consequences that will ensue.

Neither President George W. Bush nor President Trump would have let this happen.
