Poll: Voters Unimpressed by Obama’s Economic Policies

By    |   Monday, 19 March 2012 12:07 PM EDT

Likely American voters don’t view President Barack Obama’s economic policies as productive, according to a new poll from The Hill. The survey shows that 62 percent of voters think his policies will increase the debt, while just 25 percent think they will cut it.

Meanwhile, 48 percent of respondents see his policies increasing unemployment, while only 38 percent think those policies will create more jobs.

When it comes to energy, 58 percent of voters maintain Obama’s policies will lead to higher gasoline prices, while only 20 percent expect them to cut prices. Meanwhile, 46 percent believe his policies will make the United States even more dependent on foreign oil, while 36 percent think his policies will reduce that dependency.

On all of the questions, Obama gets a harsher critique from men than women. For example, on the issue of our dependency on foreign oil, 55 percent of men think Obama will increase it, while 29 percent believe he’ll decrease it. But among women, 41 percent believe he’ll decrease it, while 38 percent believe he’ll increase it.

As for Obamacare, 49 percent of respondents think the Supreme Court will overturn the 2010 healthcare law, while only 29 percent believe it will be upheld.

The poll also showed a stark racial divide. On every question, a majority or plurality of white voters said they expected Obama’s policies to fail. But a majority or plurality of black voters expect them to succeed.

Other findings:
  • 65 percent of whites said his policies would increase the debt. But blacks by a 46-percent-to-39-percent margin said they would reduce it;
  • 61 percent of whites said they expect gas prices to increase because of Obama’s policies while blacks by 42 percent to 29 percent expect them to drop;
  • While 50 percent of whites say unemployment will increase due to his policies, 72 percent of blacks say they think it will go down, and
  • Whites by a 47-percent-to-33-percent margin say Obama’s policies will make the United States more dependent on foreign oil imports, but 68 percent of blacks say it will make the country less dependent.
The Hill also found a measurable gender gap between men and women, although both concluded that most of Obama’s policies would fail.
  • Sixty-five percent of men thought his administration’s policies would raise gasoline prices and debt, while 55 percent said they would increase dependence on foreign oil and 52 percent said they would increase joblessness.
  • Fifty-nine percent of women thought the national debt would increase under Obama’s approach, while 52 percent felt the same way about gasoline prices.
