Trump: Christie 'One Email Away From a Disaster'

By    |   Tuesday, 21 January 2014 01:32 PM EST

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is just "one email away from a disaster," billionaire developer and possible 2016 presidential candidate Donald Trump says.

"He's a friend of mine. He's a good friend of mine. He's a good guy," Trump told the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College, according to CNN.

"But you know, he's one email away from a disaster."

Christie has been mired in "bridge-gate," after emails written by his top aides revealed they had engaged in political payback by ordering traffic-clogging lane closures at the George Washington Bridge.

While Christie claims he was lied to and betrayed by his staff, federal investigators are  probing the scandal and have issued numerous subpoenas to the governor's appointees.

"It's a very scary situation for Chris, and we'll see how he handles it," Trump told the group, just hours before Christie was inaugurated for his second term as governor.

Trump said bridge-gate will make it harder for Christie to seek the next GOP presidential nomination.

"At a minimum it's going to be tougher for him because of what's happened," he said.

According to CNN, Trump believes the next GOP presidential nominee will be "somebody that nobody is even thinking about."

He also warned the tea party activists to push their agenda with moderation.

"I love the tea party and I love many of the things that the tea party represents … They have to be careful, however, because [Republicans] could have had two or three or four more senators right now if the tea party had been a little bit more lenient, a little bit more understanding," Trump said.
