Political Consultant Stone: 'Control Freak' Christie 'Not Credible'

By    |   Tuesday, 04 February 2014 06:33 PM

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is on a misguided campaign to portray his former high-paid appointee David Wildstein as a "lunatic" for shutting lanes to the George Washington Bridge without telling Christie, political consultant and strategist Roger Stone says.

"It is highly unlikely, given the situation around Gov. Christie that someone higher than Mr. Wildstein didn't know. That's like saying [Richard Nixon operatives G. Gordon] Liddy and [James] McCord broke into the Watergate [Hotel] and it went no higher," Stone told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"So, this is a trashing of Wildstein, he's a lunatic, he's a madman, he's a loose cannon. Wait a minute? Chris Christie hired him at $150,000 a year to be his eyes and ears at the Port Authority. He wasn't an irresponsible wild man then, according to Christie.

"Now, because he might go rogue, and, perhaps tell the truth, he's insane, so he has to be discredited. It's right out of the Bill Clinton playbook," Stone said Tuesday.

He said he wants to hear testimony from Wildstein, whose order to close the lanes caused four days of bumper-to-bumper traffic and was allegedly used as political payback for a local mayor's not endorsing Christie.

"There's a number of people subpoenaed. I want to hear what Wildstein and the other 17 people who have been called on have to say," he said.

"Chris Christie is a control freak, his political operation was very tight, and it's not credible to me that one day this nice lady, [Christie's Deputy Chief of Staff] Bridget Kelly, decided to say, let's cause problems on the bridge.

"So, what did the governor know and when did he know it? He's trying to rush to a judgment here. He insists he knew nothing, that's great, that's what Nixon said. I've seen this movie before."
