Middle East Expert Phares: Iran Will Continue Developing Weapons

By    |   Monday, 30 September 2013 04:01 PM EDT

Iranian president Hasan Rouhani will use his cordial conversation with President Barack Obama as a pretense to further develop strategic weapons, according to Dr. Walid Phares, a Middle East and terrorism expert for Fox News Channel.

"The Obama administration, as we all know, has been trying to reach out and cut a deal with the Iranian regime for many years," Phares told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"The Iranian regime will use this façade of the United States is not going to attack us, it's going to lift the sanction, so that they could basically apply what they want," he said.

Story continues below video.

"And what they want is basically is to continue with the development of their strategic weapons. Not the nuke first, but the missiles. That's what my concern is," Phares said.

Last week, Obama and Rouhani spoke by phone in the first chat between an American and Iranian president since 1979.

Obama said he believes Iran and the United States can reach a "comprehensive solution" on Iran’s nuclear program.

Phares is not impressed by the U.N. resolution which will allow for inspectors to search Syria for chemical weapons and remove them.

"The Russians are going to be the one to observe, monitor, and eventually dismantle," Phares said.

"But … so far, the Syrians, Iranians, some of their allies in Iraq, and Hezbollah are the winner of this equation because they saved the skin of the regime in Syria. The regime in Syria was expecting that there will be strikes … and now they're free."
