Humorist O'Rourke: Boomers Too 'Self-Absorbed' to Be 'Commies'

By    |   Tuesday, 14 January 2014 07:43 PM

Humorist P.J. O'Rourke says the Baby Boomer generation has made the world a better place — because its members are just so self-absorbed.

"I give it a B-plus, and the reason is that we live in just such a much nicer, more tolerant, decent world," O'Rourke told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"And it's not because Baby Boomers are good. It's actually because they're so self-absorbed that being a Nazi or being a Commie is just too much work for the Baby Boomer. It's not enough about me.

"We all care about ourselves, think about ourselves, it's all about the self, and it turns out to benefit mankind."

O'Rourke — who was managing editor of the National Lampoon and is author of the new book "The Baby Boom: How It Got That Way (And It Wasn't My Fault) (And I'll Never Do It Again)"— said Americans shouldn't rely on government help so much.

"If you want politics to solve all your problems, your problems are going to get solved in a really haphazard, low-level way," he said.

"So, I'll give President [Barack] Obama this: he's not promising much more. He's only promising a little more . . . [but] he doesn't seem to feel we are very exceptional, which is why he should be drummed out of the Baby Boomers.''

O'Rourke says he approves of the current crop of kids growing up because they are more accepting of different things.

"They're great. I like their attitudes about people being different, different religions, different races, different ethnicities, different sexual orientations," O'Rourke said.

"They don't even seem to notice things like this. They seem to be very smart and easygoing and a generation with a pretty good sense of humor — when you get their face out of the iPhone!"

That said, he added, ''We do live in that atmosphere of political correctness. You've got these LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] clubs at an age when they shouldn't be having anything."

"I feel like the institutions out there are saying to kids there's something wrong with you if you don't have a problem. Why aren't you addicted to drugs? And we've got some ADD drug right here we could get you addicted to.

"I don't like sending that message because, especially to a group of kids that, as far as I can see, are just much cooler about these things than I was."

O'Rourke is not a fan of illicit drug use, but he says it's futile to try to stop the use of marijuana.

"There are parts of the drug war that we just lost and we need to surrender. I'm sorry, it's over with marijuana," he said.

"I don't think it's great for you. I certainly hope my kids don't do it, but, on the other hand, I've got a 16-year-old daughter – here's a drug that makes teenage boys drive slow.

"I am much more worried about those boys with beer. I've been there, you know?"
