Kevin McCarthy: Presidents Should Be Governors First

By    |   Friday, 15 November 2013 08:29 AM

Anyone who wants to be president should have been a governor first, House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy believes.

"I'm a firm believer that I don't think that anybody should become president if they haven't been governor first," the California Republican told MSNBC Thursday. "A governor picks the Cabinet, has to work with both sides, can't print more money, has to have a balanced budget."

McCarthy's comments were pointed at President Barack Obama and his continuous refusal to negotiate with Republicans, especially in recent days over the problems facing Obamacare.

McCarthy seemed to be giving a nod to potential GOP candidates such as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

At the same time, however, they create a challenge for others, such as Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, and Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky.
