Kinzinger to GOP: Don't Vote No on Syria to Embarrass Obama

By    |   Monday, 09 September 2013 10:39 PM EDT

A freshman Republican congressman who is also an Iraq and Afghanistan veteran is pleading with members of his party not to vote against a military strike on Syria just to embarrass the president.

Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., said he still believes in the notion that politics should end at the water's edge.

"People are principally opposed to this, and I understand it," Kinzinger said Monday on Fox News Channel's "O'Reilly Factor." "But if you're looking at voting against this because you want to embarrass the president, this is not the time and the place to do this."

Whatever action the United States takes against Syria for using chemical weapons on civilians, there will be "epic ramifications" throughout the world – and throughout history, Kinzinger said.

"In 10 or 20 years the history books are going to talk about this hugely defining time in world history, and it's going to say, where was America? Was it too fatigued? Was there politics being played? Or did it stand up, even under a bad administration, to the use of chemical weapons?" Kinzinger said.
