Rep. Huelskamp: Bad Budget Deal Maintains 'Status Quo'

By    |   Tuesday, 10 December 2013 06:55 PM

The House will inevitably pass the federal budget and avoid a government shutdown, but less than half of Republican lawmakers will support it, according to Rep. Tim Huelskamp of Texas.

"The only way it could pass would be with Democrat votes. At the end of the day, less than half the Republicans would support," Huelskamp told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

Story continues below video.

"It's the typical end-of-the-year deal and the American people are tired of the same old way. It's status quo. It's another addition of $100 billion of new spending."

Huelskamp said he is so sure a budget will pass that he made a prediction it will with some of his constituents.

"If Washington does the same thing they always do, they'll come to a bipartisan agreement to raise spending for everybody and that seems to be the deal that's in the works, to undo the only spending cut in years, perhaps decades, the sequester and replace it with even more spending," he said.

"That's a deal that conservatives can't accept and it's going to add to the deficit. It's going to say hey we got cuts today, we're going to put those off until sometime in the future, that's the Washington way."

Huelskamp said he was embarrassed at President Barack Obama's handshake with Cuban President Raul Castro during the funeral of Nelson Mandela.

"Here is a man still keeping people in prison and the president cozies up to him. This is quite embarrassing and quite a major mistake except it was planned ahead of time. It wasn't an accident," he said.

"Those things are all prearranged but very embarrassing . . . It says a lot about this administration's commitment to liberty around the world and they're willing to look the other way."
