Washington Examiner's Ferrechio: Obamacare Fix 'May Not Sell'

Thursday, 14 Nov 2013 05:09 PM

Democrats in the Senate and the House are "keenly aware" that President Barack Obama's latest Affordable Care Act fix is likely not enough and may demand further action, Susan Ferrechio, chief congressional correspondent for The Washington Examiner, says.

"They know that this may not sell to the public. They're talking further fixes. You hear them say we need to do more than just what the president is offering; we need to solidify this with something," Ferrechio told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

Story continues below video.

"So I don't get the sense that this has quelled the mutiny amongst the Democrats in Congress . . . President Obama may have wanted that and some of the Democratic leaders may be going along with him for now, but stay tuned because, depending on how this whole fix rolls out, they may need to do more."

Ferrechio says Obama's new healthcare tweak announced on Thursday — allowing Americans to keep their canceled policies for another year, if they can get them — brings additional uncertainty to the health insurance marketplace.

"The big question is, what's going to happen in the days and weeks ahead? What are we going to hear from the insurance companies? They're not required to offer these health plans, will they do it? Who will they offer them to?" Ferrechio said.

"They may only offer it to the more desirable customers, the young and the healthy. What's this going to do? Is it going to work or is it just for this political Band-Aid?"
