Rep. Gohmert: Allies Wondering 'What the Heck' US Is Doing in Syria

By    |   Monday, 23 Sep 2013 07:33 PM

The Obama administration's counterterrorism strategy — arming groups linked to the terrorists who attacked the U.S. on 9/11 — is confusing the nation's allies, Texas Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert said Monday.

Gohmert, vice chairman of the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security, told "The Steve Malzberg Show" he and other lawmakers were alarmed at the reaction of some allies during a recent trip to the Middle East.

"Some of our allies were wondering what in the heck we were doing [and] thinking about attacking on behalf of the Muslim Brotherhood and al-Qaida in Syria," he said. "And of course last week the administration, without congressional approval, sent 400 tons of military weapons to the Muslim Brothers/al-Qaida rebels.

"I know they said, 'oh we're just making sure they go to the good guys.' Well actually the good guys are not in that fight other than a handful that we can find," adding that the allies wondered why the U.S. "could not understand that it was Muslim Brotherhood, al-Qaida, Taliban, those guys that attacked you on 9/11 and now you're looking at helping them?"

Gohmert said the weapons approval "certainly appears to be a violation of the law" banning providing arms to terrorists.

He also questioned the sense of any meetings between administration and Iranian officials this week.

"We’re all sitting wondering which one of the U.S. allies is the Obama administration going to throw away next," he said. "That's not a good way to conduct foreign policy. So when you sit down with an archenemy that believes you're the great Satan, you're sending the wrong message to your allies and you're sending the wrong messages to your enemies."
