Rep. Garrett: Obamacare 'Invasion of Privacy'

By    |   Monday, 23 Sep 2013 05:39 PM

The pitched House battle over defunding the Affordable Care Act has been largely misrepresented by the media as Americans now look to the Senate this week to see if lawmakers "reflect their beliefs or not," New Jersey Republican Rep. Scott Garrett said Monday.

"What the mainstream media says is Republicans voted to shutdown the government over Obamacare," he told "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"That’s not the case . . . We said we want to keep [government] open, we're going to fund it. We're going to defund Obamacare, which the American public wants, and we're also going to give flexibility to the administration with regard to the debt limit. But the way the press covers this is totally distorted and that does play into the dynamics over in the Senate."

Americans now have "to go beyond past the press … and tell their senators, 'I do not want Obamacare but I don't want the government to shut down either, so pass the House bill.'"

"This is the moment that Americans can see [if] Washington reflects their beliefs or not," he said.

Garrett said besides the costs the new law will incur and job losses it will cause, Obamacare will also entail "the invasion of your privacy" with the establishment of an electronic "data hub."

"All your personal information, your veteran status, your immigration status, your tax returns, your health records, any and everything you could possibly think of will be fed into this one central government bureaucrat hub and we've never seen anything like this in the history of this country or probably the world — and that's all part of Obamacare," he said.

He said the hub, even if it was secure, will "become the hackers' largest target."
