Frmr. Gov. Ehrlich: Obama Has Made Dependence 'Cool'

By    |   Friday, 06 December 2013 04:06 PM

Republicans must stop saying "stupid things" that tarnish the party, turn off voters, and falsely perpetuate that the GOP is waging a "war on women," former Maryland Gov. Bob Ehrlich says.

In an interview with Steve Malzberg on Newsmax TV, the veteran Republican, author of the new book, "America: Hope for Change," agreed with House Speaker John Boehner who said this week the GOP must be more sensitive to women.

Story continues below video.

"Part of it is when we do dumb things … where we follow stupid tactics, when we have one of our members shout out and interrupt the president in a State of the Union, when we have these guys running for the Senate talk about rape in a nonchalant way, we just feed [the Democrats'] narrative," Ehrlich said.

"Think about how far the Democratic Party's come. Now, they were convincing and they convinced young women that Mitt Romney was going to be at the CVS intercepting their birth control pills and that is sort of their mindset: It's a constitutional right.

"Now, I'm for contraception. I'm for birth control. I just don't think it's a constitutional right. I don't think I should have to pay for it."

Royce said the key is for Republicans to discuss those issues without foot-in-mouth.

"We have to articulate these differences, but we can't have candidates do stupid things and say stupid things in the course of hotly contested elections," he said.

Two Republican lawmakers, Rep. Richard Mourdock of Indiana, and Rep. Todd Akin of Missouri lost elections last year following controversial comments they made.

Mourdock stated that if a woman was raped and became pregnant, that was "something that God intended to happen." Akin said women who are victims of "legitimate rape," rarely get pregnant.

Ehrlich said the Obama administration has been ruling by a "sort of hyper-progressivism – I call it progressivism on steroids – the European social Democrat model brought to this country."

"The bottom line to what's happening in this country is Barack Obama's made dependency cool again.

"When you look Social Security/disability claims quadrupling … 49 million people on Food Stamps … revisiting the issue of 99 weeks unemployment and increasing that, you look at the nature of government and the whole Obamacare – it's dependence."

But he believes the tides could turn in next year's elections.

"I point out to everyone all the time … elections have consequences," he said.

Ehrlich's book Is published by Post Hill Press.
