Citizens United's Bossie: Conservatives Ready to Fight IRS

Monday, 02 December 2013 06:24 PM

The chairman of Citizens United, the conservative nonprofit dedicated to restoring government to citizen control, says his group will continue defending the nonprofit status of right-leaning political organizations.

"The left's always been about silence and silencing the opposition, so that's why they created the mechanism of campaign finance, so it would silence people across the country," David Bossie told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"[We] decided to take on the federal government . . . because we felt that our First Amendment rights were being trampled on," he said Monday.

Bossie says that if the Internal Revenue Service goes forward with rule changes making it tougher for conservative nonprofits to operate, his group will fight.

"I'm not interested in a fight with the IRS. I do not want to do that. I hope that they will not make these rules," he said.

"But, clearly, the president of the United States has made clear to the IRS commissioner that he wants these rules. And so, we are going to have to fight this battle one day at a time."
