Rep. Zeldin to Newsmax TV: Bad Leadership to Dictate COVID Regs From DC

Rep. Lee Zeldin, R-New York, ridiculed Joe Biden on Thursday for his suggestion earlier in the day that should he become president he will ''call for all Americans'' to wear masks for 100 days.

''Good leadership on the part of the president of the United States, the federal government, is to understand, not just from one state to the next, but also often times from the region of one state to the next, we are a diverse country,'' said Zeldin, 40, who in November easily won a fourth term to represent New York’s 1st Congressional District on the eastern half of Long Island.

''We have city populations. We have suburbs. We have rural areas. And a one-size-fits-all solution coming out of the White House is not the answer on this. It’s about empowering those state and local elected officials to do the right thing, not … the hypocrisy and double standards.''

Appearing on Newsmax TV's Stinchfield, Zeldin made reference to several state and local officials who have imposed restrictions on gatherings, particularly Democrats such as California Gov. Gavin Newsom, San Francisco Mayor London Breed and Austin, Texas, Mayor Steve Adler, and then violated or traveled out of jurisdiction to avoid those restrictions.

His comments came following Biden’s appearance on CNN, where — besides his call for 100 days of mask wearing — would also mandate masks in federal buildings and on interstate transportation.

''It’s amazing watching from coast to coast the hypocrisy, the double standards,'' Zeldin said. ''It’s a critical aspect of leadership to be consistent when you’re going to make statements and enact restrictions that have a limitation on the behavior of an individual, a business, that you can’t be violating those restrictions yourself.

''These elected officials at the state and local level are not showing leadership when they are flaunting their own restrictions and contradicting their own statements.''
