Jewish Schindler Tells How He Earned Trust of Muslim Refugees

Yank Barry, who is known as the "Jewish Schindler," tells Newsmax TV that he was able to gain the confidence of the Muslim refugees streaming into Bulgaria from Syria by being able to offer them refugee status.

"We promised them refugee status, which as you know is really hard to get. Once we got that, they had confidence in us," Barry, founder of Global Village Champions Foundation, told Ed Berliner on "MidPoint" on Newsmax TV Friday.

"Then we put them in the hotels, then we got them traveling permits so we could start placing families in other countries," he explained. "The word spread after a while once we placed four or five families in Germany, two families in Switzerland, a family in Sweden. The word got around."

Barry admitted that he did have to work to earn their trust because of his Jewish faith.

"In the early days when we were just feeding people in the camps, before I had the hotels, there were some refugees who refused to eat the food. They thought I was poisoning it," he explained.

"We had a lot of hate mail here in Bulgaria from Bulgarians who didn't want refugees in their country. That's all settled down now," but he says that "it's taken four years."

The Global Village Champions now has two hotels in Bulgaria where the group houses the Syrian refugees as they come across the border.
