The time is 1942. The place, Bataan, a 530-square-mile a province situated in the Central Luzon region of the Philippines. There, U.S. and Filipino forces — under siege by the Japanese Army — were forced to march more than 62 miles in what infamously became known as the Bataan Death March. But two fearless soldiers, Damon “Rocky” Gause and William Lloyd Osborne, escaped that fate, fleeing the Japanese and sailing from the Philippines to Australia aboard a leaky, 20-foot fishing boat.

It took Gause and Osborne a grueling 52 days and 3,200 miles to reach freedom. During the harrowing journey, the Americans faced killer typhoons, constant threats from Japanese war ships, submarines and fighter planes, and were plagued by the lack of food and water. They even landed for a brief time on an island serving as the world’s largest leper colony. When they finally showed up at Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s office in Brisbane, the astonished military leader uttered, “Well, I’ll be damned!”

What makes this story even more amazing is that both men kept a detailed journal of the do-or-die voyage and had a small camera on board to record stark, black-and-white photos of their adventures.

“[It’s] one of the most incredible escapes in World War II,’’ says Tim Gray, who produced and directed the documentary. “We have their daily thoughts and emotions to guide us during their long and treacherous journey, plus some incredible photographs that the men took on their trip.”

It’s a riveting, 90-minute thrill ride more exciting than any action movie in theaters today — one you and your family will not want to miss! Join us Saturday evening for “War Journal: The Incredible World War II Escape of Major Damon ‘Rocky’ Gause.”
