Rep. Jones: Policing World Creates 'Hatreds of Our Way of Life'

By    |   Friday, 09 Jan 2015 10:40 AM

U.S. foreign policy, specifically "trying to take care of the world," results in enmity leading to attacks such as this week’s terrorist shooting at the French magazine Charlie Hebdo, says North Carolina Rep. Walter Jones, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, who appeared Friday on "America’s Forum" on Newsmax TV.

"I'm like Ron Paul, I believe in not trying to police the world and take care of the world," said Jones, referring to former Republican Rep. Ron Paul’s non-interventionist foreign policy position. "Sometimes by trying to police the world, we create these hatreds of our way to life, which does not excuse this tragedy in France. I'm just trying to make a general statement about the world's situation."

The cost alone of such an intrusive foreign policy is staggering, Jones said, noting that when President Bill Clinton left office the national debt was $5.6 trillion and today it stands at more than $18 trillion.

"Yet we continue to spend money overseas in Afghanistan and these other countries," he continued. "We're doing this when we can't even fix the roads, bridges and schools in America. I want a sound foreign policy and a strong military to be able to defend our country, but the way that we have continued to go around the world and trying to change . . . and for what?

"Saddam Hussein was an evil dictator, but if he was in power today, I don't know if we'd be in the same situation in the world that we are,’ he said. "We cannot change every country in the world and we cannot force people to believe the way we believe. We need to defend the American people from these terrorists, but we must have a foreign policy that makes sense for the American people. "

Jones described himself as "180" degrees from notorious war hawk Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham.

"I do respect them, but I am certainly on a different mindset," said Jones.
