Phares: Catastrophe Looms If US Pairs With Iran

The United States is heading toward a catastrophe on several levels if it pairs with Iran to fight against the threat of the Islamic State (ISIS), Middle East expert and best-selling author Dr. Walid Phares told Newsmax TV Thursday.

The partnership that the Obama administration wants to establish, not just on the political level, but also the financial or military level would be worrisome, Phares told "America's Forum" host Ric Blackwell.

There have been many experts who said Iran needs the United States, not the other way around, but Phares said the sentiment in the Middle East is different.

"I go on Arab TV every day...those experts or commentators or voices that are saying 'oh we don't need America,'" he said. "That's exactly the position of the Iranian regime saying oh we're not interested, you're interested in us, without us you cannot do it. That's precisely what they want."

But had the United States intervened in Syria earlier or had not pulled out of Iraq so soon, Iran's assistance in fighting ISIS wouldn't be needed at all, he said.

"Actually, had we been smart enough in 2009, in June of 2009 we would have backed this huge revolution against the Ayatollah in Iran and just imagine, just imagine that Iran would have changed as of 2009 then the battle of ISIS would have been much easier," Phares commented.

Tensions are also rising in Turkey, where a group of radical nationalists with the Turkiye Genclik Birligi, or Turkish Youth Union, attacked three U.S. sailors from the USS Ross guided missile destroyer while they were on shore leave on Wednesday. However, Phares said he doesn't believe the attack was by jihadists.

"If they were jihadist they would have killed the sailors," said Phares. "Now, don't be surprised, our sources are telling us that some of these organizations could have penetrated."

That would make sense "because the goal of the Iranian regime is to create a super wedge between Turkey and the United States so we cannot do anything about Kobani, anything in Iraq," said Phares. "That could have been the case, but of course we don't have full evidence at this point in time."

Meanwhile, there are conflicting reports that Kurdish forces are repelling ISIS advances, but the Kurds "need much more from the air," and they need help from Turkey, Phares said.

Phares also discussed Israel, saying that as that country comes under pressure from forces in the United States, it is "not going to lessen the relationship between the two countries, but this is going to send a message to the Iranians to Hezbollah, to Assad, to the jihadist that there is a problem between the U.S. and Israel."

When that happens, he said, "the jihadist and the anti-American will be emboldened to attack more the United States and Israel separately thinking that they are not allies any more or less allies than before."
