The Senate's filibuster rule is a major "impediment" to the Republican-controlled Congress' ability to get anything done, an Arizona lawmaker told Newsmax TV.

During an appearance on "Newsmax Now," Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., told hosts Bill Tucker and Jonathan Gilliam the rule needs to be spiked.

"I've been calling on this for a long time, and it's been so affirming in my soul to see the president have the courage to stand up and take this thing on," Franks said. "This is something that the Democrats have already made it clear they were going to change as soon as they get in power. It's going away.

"The only question is whether or not the country is going to see a glimpse of Republican policy before that happens. And I can't express to you how serious of an impediment this is to the entire agenda of being able to address the country's critical issues."

Franks noted the rule has already been changed in one case, which led to the confirmation of Supreme Court Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch.

"It's already been done in one sense of the word, and the debate was really over when Neil Gorsuch was nominated," Franks said. "[Republicans] would've been laughed out of the Senate [if the rule was not changed and Gorsuch was not confirmed], and so they changed the rule because they knew they could no longer hide behind the farce that it is. That same thing could occur again if it's done right."

Last week, President Donald Trump reiterated his belief the Senate's filibuster rule should be erased so filibusters can be ended with a 51 percent vote, rather than a 60 percent one.
