Tom DeLay: Trump Carrier Deal Has 'Serious Unintended Consequences'

President-elect Donald Trump's job-saving deal with Carrier in Indiana is dangerously inserting the federal government in the free-market system – and has "real serious unintended consequences," former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, told Newsmax TV.

The deal unfairly puts Carrier's rivals "at a competitive disadvantage," the former congressman and author of "Revival, Revolution, Rebirth" told Tuesday's "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"The federal government's not supposed to be involved in the free-market system; it's supposed to enhance it; it's supposed to remove obstacles," DeLay told host Steve Malzberg. "This stuff about raising tariffs and picking winners and losers, I've got a real concern about that."

DeLay pointed out air condition competitor Trane is now "at a competitive disadvantage" while still dealing with "this oppressive market with the unions, with the regulations, with the taxation."

"[Trump] ought to pick up the phone and call Trane and say 'We'll do the same deal for you,'" DeLay said. "If you're going to get involved in this, it has real serious unintended consequences."

DeLay added Trump "needs to be looking at how he can best create a business environment that allows these people to work here and build things here rather than getting in the government and saying, 'Well, I'll give you a tax break here, but I'm not going to give the other guy a tax break . . .'"

DeLay was full of praise, however, for Trump's contact with the Taiwanese president.

"You talk about a free marketplace, Taiwan is it," he said. "I have never understood this 'One China' policy where the United States can't speak to the president of Taiwan. In fact they won't even let the president of Taiwan's plane refuel in the United States.

". . . I don't know why we're not reaching out and building even a stronger alliance with Taiwan – particularly as a burr under the saddle of the Chinese. They need a little pushback."

He also said the Senate confirmation hearings for Trump's Secretary of Defense pick, retired Gen. James Mattis, "is going to be a big test for the Senate Democrats" and "whether they can stick together."

But he also warned, "I've got some questions about his stance on Israel."

"He made a statement not too long ago about the fact that the settlements in Israel are undermining the ability to have a peace agreement," DeLay said, adding the stance could be a deal-breaker.
