Tom DeLay: GOP Must Reject Obama

Wednesday, 05 November 2014 03:25 PM

Republicans must reject President Barack Obama's policies — and not show any compromise, Tom DeLay, the former GOP House Majority Leader told Newsmax TV on Wednesday.

"What the Republicans in the House and in the Senate have to do is reject Obama. It's not the time to get along and it's not the time to compromise," DeLay told Newsmax's "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"Reject Obama, just like the American people did. What that means is they need to come together, develop a pro-constitution, pro-growth agenda that they want to carry out in the next two years.

"Tell Obama this is what we're going to do and start sending him bills. Don't start compromising with him."

In that way, Republicans can look back to what happened in similar circumstances during President Bill Clinton's reign, according to DeLay, who served Texas' 22nd District from 1985-2006.

"Do what we did in 1995; send the welfare reform bill three times and let him veto it twice before he ends up signing it. That's what Clinton did, but that's what the Republicans need to do," he said.

"Don't go down the White House on Friday and say we're going to kumbaya and everybody is going to be wonderful.

"The American people have spoken and the Republicans have to gain the American people's trust by presenting an agenda that they want to see happen."

DeLay called the overwhelming Republican midterm victory "pretty awesome."

"All I can say is wow. I didn't really anticipate the frustration of the American voter against Obama, his incompetence and his lawlessness. They sent a very clear message: stop Obama and stop the Democrats," DeLay said.

That said, DeLay added, voters "didn't particularly say we trust the Republicans like [Senate Minority Leader] Mitch McConnell is saying.

"He needs to re-evaluate, this is the time to evaluate what was the message. The message was stop Obama."

Asked how Congress should react if the commander-in-chief begins issuing executive orders, such as his rumored plan to give legal status to millions of illegal immigrants, DeLay responded:

"Then the Republican Congress has to exercise the power of the purse and defund that executive order.

"If he does the executive order, that's a declaration of war. The Republican Congress needs to understand that and treat it accordingly.

DeLay said Hispanics are also beginning to embrace the Republican Party.

"The Republicans have completely negated this whole national media notion that the Hispanics are going to turn Texas blue and the Democrats came into Texas to turn Texas blue. Boy, we just whacked them and whopped them," he said.

"There are Republican Hispanics and more coming. They're going to look at the Republican majority again and understand that if they want to play this political game in Texas, you got to play Republican. That helps us recruit more Republican Hispanics.

"The same with women. Both Hispanics and women are rejecting the Democrats, just like on a national level of the American voters rejecting the Democrats, and they're moving towards the Republican. We have a bright future. I'm very optimistic about it."
