Rights Activist: Texas Pool Incident Shows Need for Police Reform

By    |   Tuesday, 09 Jun 2015 04:56 PM

The cop suspended after pulling out his gun and pointing it at teenagers at a Texas pool party shows how desperately American law enforcement needs to be reformed, says Michael Meyers, president of the New York Civil Right Coalition.

"This is not 21st century policing," Meyers said Tuesday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

A seven-minute video shows police officers trying to gain control of the crowd of adolescents at the Craig Ranch North Community Pool in McKinney.

As two teen boys approach an officer trying to subdue a girl in a bikini, the cop pulls his firearm and chases them away. He then subdues the girl and holsters the gun.

"Thank goodness there were other police officers there. They de-escalated the situation and they stopped the police officer who had pulled his gun," said Meyers, who is also a columnist for the New York Daily News.

"But you would think by the way the police officer acted or reacted to the crowd … [that] he was there by himself and he wasn't. There was a full [phalanx] of police officers present."

"My question is, what the heck is he doing on the ground pushing down that girl's face in the ground? That police officer needs, if he hasn't had yet … psychological tests."

Meyers said that according to President Barack Obama's 21st century task force on policing and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani's task force report on policing in New York, "these are not new problems."

"These are old problems and police officers are supposed to de-escalate a situation. They're not to provoke. They're not to use excessive force when not necessary," he said.

The Texas officer in question has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, although some in the community are demanding he be axed.
