Rep. Will Hurd said he was inspired and moved by the resiliency of the small town of Sutherland Springs, Texas, during a visit there with Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday.

In an interview Thursday on "The Joe Pags Show" on Newsmax TV, the Texas Republican called last Sunday's mass shooting by gunman Devin Kelley at the First Baptist Church was "mind-boggling."

"Being down there [Wednesday] with the vice president and talking with some of the families that lost people in Sutherland Springs, when you realize . . . everybody that lost a family member knew all the other people that were killed as well," he said.

"So not only were they grieving for themselves and for their own family, they were grieving for their fellow neighbors."

But, he added, "the one thing that warmed my heart through this process is I got to hear the stories of some really amazing people."

"So many more Americans and folks across the world have gotten the chance to see and to hear about these amazing people and see the resiliency of a community like Sutherland Springs," he said.

"I think the community and what they expressed to me [Wednesday] was that they were overwhelmed with the amount of support and prayers and hugs that they've gotten from all over the country," he added.

Hurd also said he expected tax reform to be completed before the end of the year.

"Your listeners are going to be able to do taxes on a postcard in a handful of minutes," he said of the tax code reform. "You're going to not send as much money to Washington, D.C."
