Rep. Stockman: Obama Administration Uses 'Brute Force' on Critics

By    |   Wednesday, 17 September 2014 01:06 PM

Texas Rep. Steve Stockman says that when lawmakers speak out they pay a heavy price, but it's small compared to what others give for this country.

"There's a Chinese saying that the nail that sticks up gets hammered first," Stockman told J.D. Hayworth on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV Wednesday.

"As I've been a vocal opponent of this administration, we also have seen a similar kind of brute force in response.

"We've called for the arrest of Lois Lerner," he said. "We've called for investigations against the IRS, and that has got a blowback on us."

"People wonder, well, why don't congressmen speak up more?" the Republican lawmaker asked. "Well you pay a heavy family price and you pay a heavy toll and that's going to continue to be that way."

However, Stockman says that the "price" needs to be put in perspective.

"Many people have given their life for their country, and, if I don't speak up, then I'm much less [of a] man," he said.

"There's a foundation in which people sacrifice all the time and what I'm sacrificing is nowhere near what many others have sacrificed," he added.

Stockman is serving his second non-consecutive term in Congress. He was first elected in 1994 and again in 2012. He challenged Texas Sen. John Cornyn in the primary in March, but lost by more than 40 percentage points.

His first victory was considered a major upset, when he defeated former Rep. Jack Brooks, who had held that congressional seat since 1953.

According to Stockman, success in such situations comes not from the person but the message.

"Our friends in the liberal press said 'don't worry, he can't win, he doesn't have a campaign manager, there's no campaign consultants,' but it wasn't me so much as the grassroots that rose up," he explained.

"It's the message, and that's the one thing that people keep forgetting — it's not the person, but it's the message and the ideology that will carry you through, if you do it right," Stockman said.

"Our last election of the president was lost because we didn't get the base excited, we didn't encourage them," he added. "We need to do that."

"We keep forgetting, the people are out there are sacrificing for us. We need to realize it, and we need to stand up for them."
