Gordon Chang: Trump 'More Concerned' on NK Than SKorea

President Donald Trump's State of the Union speech showed he is "more concerned" about human rights on the Korean peninsula than the leaders there, according to journalist Gordon Chang.

Kim Jong Un believes talk of human rights abuses in North Korea "undermines" the "legitimacy" of his regime — while South Korean President Moon Jae-in ignores a growing "nationalism" there, The Daily Beast columnist and contributor at World Affairs Journal and Forbes.com told Newsmax TV's "Newsmax Now" on Thursday.

"The most important part of the State of the Union" was the story of North Korean defector Ji Seong-ho "because . . . it showed . . . the triumph of the human spirit," Chang said.

"Here, we have President Trump much more concerned about the human rights of Koreans than Moon Jae-in," Chang said.

"No South Korean wants a war [with North Korea] and the casualty estimates in the first hours of a conflict on the Korean peninsula are just horrific," he said. "But that doesn't mean you have to do what President Moon is trying to do, which is to give money to the North Koreans. As a matter of fact, I think that makes conflict much more likely."

Chang predicted once the Olympics are completed — and when the U.S.-South Korean joint military exercises start up — "that could be a time of real turbulence on the peninsula."

China will not help, he said.

"Beijing – unless we change the incentives that Beijing operates under — they're not going to help us, they're going to support the North Koreans, and it's really up to the Trump administration to take some actions that throw Beijing off balance," he said.

"Because, if we don't do that, we know what’s going to happen, and it's not going to be good."
