A Food Network reality show judge who came to the U.S. from Great Britain tells Newsmax TV that when he married an American in 2010 and adopted her country as his, he felt he needed to learn "what it means to become one of you guys."

"The only way I knew how to do that was through food," Simon Majumdar, author of "Fed, White, and Blue: Finding America with My Fork," told "MidPoint" host Ed Berliner on Tuesday.

"I asked people out there in the United States to invite me to become part of their food experiences, and they really did," said Majumdar, a globetrotting food writer and culinary judge on shows including "Iron Chef America" and "Cutthroat Kitchen."

He made lobster rolls in Maine, caught salmon in Alaska, and noshed on kosher barbecue in Kansas City. He was welcomed as a curious new American to strangers' tables, kitchens, farms, and distilleries.

"Once you sit down with someone or share a meal with them or find out their food history, you know a lot more about them," said Majumdar. "It really wasn't just about going to a restaurant and filling my stomach."

The Los Angeles transplant said he also experienced how the American version of the proverbial "melting pot" has influenced its cuisine.

"What you've got here in America is unique," he said. "You've got this real hybrid of food from all over the world that's brought by trade and immigration and even by war."

"I've been to nearly 70 countries and I've been to every state in the United States," he said. "I can say that we really do have some of the most exciting food — and I use the word 'we' because I'm an American citizen and I'm really proud of the food we have here."

"Yes, there's a lot of fast food," said Majumdar, "but there's also some really incredible stuff here."

And watching what you eat doesn't mean spurning every cheeseburger, he added.

"Sometimes you need someone from outside to go, 'There's nothing wrong with a great cheeseburger,'" said Majumdar.
