RNC's Spicer: Democrats Scare Women Over Hobby Lobby Ruling

Monday, 07 July 2014 05:05 PM

Democrats are using shameless scare tactics to trick Americans into voting against GOP lawmakers, says Sean Spicer, communications director for the Republican National Committee.

"The Democrats know that the only way that they can win is by scaring different segments of the population,'' Spicer told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"Whether it's minorities or women, they can't appeal to a broad-based America, so they scare them,'' Spicer said Monday.

He pointed to the Supreme Court ruling that the arts-and-crafts chain Hobby Lobby is not obligated to cover forms of birth control its owners equate with abortion, such as the "morning after'' pill and IUDs.

Liberals have called the decision another salvo in the right's ongoing "war on women.''

"There are 16 types of contraception still available to anyone that works at Hobby Lobby. This is not about restricting access, this is absolutely a scare tactic,'' Spicer said.

"The problem is the left's pinned themselves into such a corner by saying we have scared people so much that we cannot win without it, we've got to keep scaring them.

"And scaring them more and more and more because we have no positive agenda for them, we've got nothing to offer, so we're just going to do this,'' he said.

Spicer said most women will find that very little has changed in the health insurance they get at work as a result of the court ruling.

"The fact is, when a woman goes in the next [few] . . . months to the pharmacy or doctor and starts talking about birth control . . . and the doctor says, yes, this is all still available and here's where it's covered, they're going to realize the lie that was perpetrated by the Democrats was just that. The facts won't match the scare tactics,'' he said.

Spicer says the Obama administration has mishandled the U.S.-Mexico border crisis, and is critical of the president's decision not to visit the Lone Star State's problem spots — where countless immigrant children are pouring in — while he is fundraising in Texas.

"The problem with the administration is they sit up there in Washington, D.C. They really don't have a complete understanding of what's going on down at the border,'' Spicer said.

"This isn't the first time that there's been a bit of tone-deafness when it comes to putting politics ahead of policy, but I really don't understand how you can go down there, have political fundraisers, make time for that kind of stuff, but not make time to see something that is universally considered a crisis.''
