Ronald Kessler: Romney Will Run State Department

Newsmax TV's "The Steve Malzberg Show"

Donald Trump's second meeting with Mitt Romney indicates the president-elect will likely tap the former Massachusetts governor and two-time presidential candidate as his secretary of state, veteran journalist Ronald Kessler told Newsmax TV.

"I don't think Donald would go to the trouble of having dinner with Mitt Romney if it was a kiss-off," Kessler, an author and former Washington Post reporter, told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Tuesday. "I think he will ask him to serve. I think Romney will agree.

"It shows Donald's true character, that he will put aside petty squabbles for the good of the country and select the best people."

The Trump-Romney meetings follow a tense year of name calling between the two men. Romney labelled Trump "a phony" and Trump called Romney a "choke artist."
Kessler said he is impressed with Trump's Cabinet picks so far.

"The Cabinet people he has proposed so far are just incredible, Elain Chao being the latest — a very good administration, totally focused," Kessler said.

"I know she wanted to be transportation secretary initially under the Bush administration, but instead she was labor secretary. So, she got exactly what she wanted."

Trump's decision to have his wife and their 10-year-old son Barron remain in New York so the boy the can finish his studies, will cost more, but Kessler told Malzberg: "I don't see it as a big problem."

"The media have gone wild about the alleged additional costs of protecting Melania. It's true there will be additional costs for police, but for Secret Service . . . it'll be the same agents," Kessler added to the host.

"In contrast, my book 'The First Family Detail' revealed that [Vice President] Joe Biden on a regular basis goes back to Wilmington, sometimes several times a week on Air Force Two, and the cost has been $1 million since he took office, and that is for personal trips," Kessler said.

"Most people can understand the need to have 10-year-old Baron finish the school year at the same school, but it's another matter to use Air Force Two for personal trips several times a week.

"Sometimes he'll go up to Wilmington to his home, come back to play golf with [President Barack] Obama, then go back against to Wilmington all at our expense. It's outrageous and the media have totally ignored that story."

Kessler's book, "The First Family Detail: Secret Service Agents Reveal the Hidden Lives of the Presidents," is published by Crown Forum.
