Sen. Ron Johnson: 'We Need to Destroy ISIS' to 'Keep This Nation Safe'

The Islamic State terrorists taking credit for blowing a Russian jet out of the sky, killing all 224 aboard, could attempt the same kind of horrific act in the United States, Sen. Sen. Ron Johnson, a member of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs tells Newsmax TV.

And because U.S. aviation security can never be 100 percent, one of the nation's first goals must be to wipe out the Islamic State (ISIS) as soon as possible, Johnson said Thursday on "Newsmax Prime" with J.D. Hayworth and Miranda Khan.

"I don't want to alarm anybody, but of course it could [happen here]. That's always been our challenge — that we have to be effective 100 percent of the time. They just have to do it once, they just have to slip through the cracks once," said Johnson, a Wisconsin Republican.

"I do not think we have the type of layered approach that really could be maximally effective. It's going to be very difficult to be 100 percent effective…. We need to destroy ISIS — [it] is probably our first line of defense of trying to keep this nation safe."

While ISIS has taken credit for the disaster — said to be in retaliation for Moscow's military strikes in Syria which have hurt the terror group — definitive evidence of its participation has not been established.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest says the U.S. hasn't yet learned the cause of the Metrojet crash over Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula last Saturday, but that evidence is pointing to terrorism.

CNN reported that U.S. intelligence officials suggest the 'specificity' of terrorist "chatter" suggests insiders planted a bomb on the plane before it departed Sharm el-Sheikh airport.
Johnson, a Wisconsin Republican, who also serves on the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, said:

"We certainly need to be concerned about what's happening in the Middle East and we need to be concerned about the threat that ISIS poses and other Islamic terrorist groups pose to civilized society.

"It's not going to surprise me if this thing gets traced back to some Islamic terror group. It shouldn't surprise anybody.

"Which is why I've certainly supported President [Barack] Obama's stated goal of degrading and defeating ISIS the sooner the better and my concern is this president doesn't really have a concerted strategy for doing so."

Johnson said the buck for protecting America’s aviation stops at the White House.

"What we have right now at airports to a great extent is ‘security theater,’ because a determined terrorist can defeat it. It's been proven. They have videos on how to do it, which is why we need a layered approach," he said.

Johnson said air marshals need to be better utilized in "the bowels of airports," keeping an eye on people working on the inside investigating them for potential problems.

"But also things like bomb-sniffing dogs. I know they're expensive, but they're incredibly effective, more effective than what we're seeing right now with the expensive machines we subject all of ourselves to," he said.

"And by the way, I'm not opposed to those. There's certainly an impact, there's certainly a benefit to 'security theater,' but we have to recognize that is not the be-all, end-all. That's not going to keep us safe.

"I don't know how you set up a foolproof security system within the U.S. We've already been pretty effective by just hardening the cockpits. That was a pretty simple procedure that went a long way toward providing Grade A security. But 100 percent security is going to be difficult to achieve."
