Roger Stone: Cruz Bringing Up Trump's Mother a 'Cheap Shot'

By    |   Friday, 15 Jan 2016 04:41 PM

Sen. Ted Cruz made a pair of blunders in trying to take down Donald Trump a couple pegs when he wrongly brought up the billionaire developer's late mother and took shots at his New York City roots, which some see as anti-Semitic, GOP political consultant Roger Stone tells Newsmax TV.

The Texas senator, who's eligibility to serve as president because he was born in Canada has been questioned by Trump, said at one time under U.S. law, Trump would have been disqualified from being to be commander-in-chief because his mother Mary Anne was born in Scotland.

"[Cruz] knows Donald Trump was born in the USA, [but has launched an] attack on Donald's mother, who is of Scottish birth but naturalized before birth," Stone said Friday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"So Donald is the son of two U.S. citizens on U.S. soil and there is no issue. That was a cheap-shot, skilled kind of debate trick that I found a bit oily."

Cruz also slipped up with his comment about Trump having "New York values," according to Stone.

The quip enraged Cruz's fellow Republican, Rep. Peter King of New York, as well as New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and countless numbers of residents in the Empire State.

Stone says some believe the remark has deeper, more troubling roots.

"Some people were offended because they thought that Cruz's reference was vaguely anti-Semitic. It's like the media, business … well who is that? That's Jews," he said.

"Two of my Jewish friends said this had the whiff of anti-Semitism."

Stone — who runs the political website StoneZone.com and is author of "The Clintons' War on Women," written with Robert Morrow, and the upcoming "Jeb! And the Bush Crime Family," written with Saint John Hunt — said he personally didn't read anti-Semitism into Cruz's comments.

"I took it to mean liberal values, spending, taxation, more gays, human rights issues, civil rights issues," he said.
