Rep. Rod Blum: I'll Walk the Walk on Term Limits

By    |   Friday, 29 May 2015 05:54 PM

Rep. Rod Blum – a member of the freshman class of Republican lawmakers swept into Congress in last November's wave that created GOP majorities in both the House and Senate – tells Newsmax TV that he not only believes in term limits, he's going to lead by example.

"I am not going to be there 10 years from now in the House of Representatives," the Iowan vowed Friday to "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth. "I backed the term limits proposed legislation, which is six years, three terms in the House of Representatives. I agree with that and I can see myself serving around six years."

Blum, a software company owner, noted that despite voters' deep disapproval of Congress, most members get re-elected.

"How can that be? The reason is gerrymandering," he said. "Most of the districts are set up either to save Democrat or save Republican. In any given election, you probably have 25-35 congressional districts that are actually competitive."

Now that he's in Washington, Blum said he'll be very vigilant about making sure Iran is not "nuclear enabled."

"We need to be very, very careful about what [a nuclear] agreement [with Iran] says and be prepared to vote it down if it's not in [America's] or Israel's best interest," he said."Israel is a friend. … They're a democracy and believe in human rights in a region that is so unstable."

"The Arab Spring has been a dismal failure since it started and the dictators in that area, they were dictators, but at least they were functioning countries," he added. "Today we have countries like Syria and Iraq that are not even countries."

On the volatile issue of immigration reform, Blum said "first and foremost, we need to secure the border."

"Let's secure the border and then we'll go on to reform this system," he said. "Our immigration system is out of date for legal immigration and that needs to be looked at.

"Then of course, the last thing we need to do is look at the people that are already here. Certainly, they should not be rewarded for breaking our laws."

Blum said both sides of the aisle "have some ideas and we need to debate it in an open and transparent way."

"There's many solutions out there, but we keep kicking the can down the road. Let's talk about it, let's debate it and let's not be talking about this two years from now," he said.
