Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., told Newsmax TV on Monday that Americans should get a thirty to sixty-day break from payments on credit cards and mortgages while the country deals with the coronavirus outbreak.

“We have to be doing everything we can to stop” the coronavirus, Scott said on “The National Report,” adding that “next we have to help those who have been hurt” by the outbreak.

“We have to be fiscally responsible, even in a crisis, so let’s focus on not the big companies and do bailouts for the big companies, let’s focus on the small businesses, let’s focus on the hourly workers, let’s focus on the tip workers. Those are the ones who have immediately been impacted by this.”

Scott continued, “I don’t want to put new mandates on businesses, [but] I want to figure out how to get past this crisis.”

The senator said, “Give people a break for thirty or sixty days, put a moratorium on their credit cards, their car payments, the mortgages, things like that. Give them a break, that’s the fastest way we can put money into people’s hands.”

He added, “If you’re [tested] positive, or if you’ve been around someone who is positive, you have got to quarantine. We’ve got to stop this spread.”

The senator also suggested, “give the doctors some leeway. If there’s an FDA-approved drug, they should be able to use that on any coronavirus patient.”

Scott said that although he would like for small businesses that can operate with social distancing practices to remain open, a lockdown in the state will probably happen eventually so “let’s do it now,” as young people on spring break continue to crowd Florida’s beaches.
