Richard Viguerie on Romney's Trump Attack: 'Criticism Rings Hollow'

By    |   Thursday, 03 March 2016 06:09 PM EST

Mitt Romney's attack on Donald Trump Thursday showed a vigor that was sorely lacking during his 2012 presidential campaign — "so, his criticism rings hollow," conservative activist Richard Viguerie told Newsmax TV.

"I wish he had shown that same manner of articulateness, passion, energy, drive, as in 2012 as he did today," Viguerie, chairman of Conservative HQ.com, told "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth. "But the thing that he's complaining about is really driven to a large extent because of him and his friends, the Republican leadership."

"The reason that the grass-roots is going to Trump is because of the failures, the lies, the political corruption of the Republican establishment, which Mitt Romney epitomizes," he added. "So, his criticism rings hollow.

"We didn't see that in 2012. We don't believe it's coming from him now — and, quite frankly, the more people like Mitt Romney attack Trump, the more his popularity increases.

"There are only two people that can stop Trump, and that's Trump himself or the conservatives," Viguerie told Hayworth. "Anytime the Republican establishment goes after Trump, it drives his numbers higher."
