Richard Viguerie: GOP Leaders 'Tone Deaf' to Voters' Frustration

By    |   Thursday, 08 Jan 2015 12:18 PM

It's "crazy" for the Republican leadership in Congress to attack the grassroots arm of the party, conservative commentator Richard Viguerie told Newsmax TV's "America's Forum."

"They're regularly attacking the grassroots, and how crazy is that? So, the Republican party needs to get their act together and work with their voters," Viguerie said Thursday. "This is clearly a stop Obama election, and the Republican leaders are acting as if Obama won the election."

Viguerie, who is chairman of ConservativeHQ.com, said GOP leaders were "tone deaf" to the frustration of voters and their "open rebellion about the expansion of government." He predicted it would end up damaging the chances of a Republican to win the White House in 2016.

"We could very well end up with (former Secretary of State) Hillary Clinton as the next president, because the Republican leaders are insistent on having it their way, instead of working with the grassroots," he said. "The Republican party is asking for serious trouble going into the 2016 election if the leadership is declaring war on their voting block."

As Republicans take the majority of both houses of Congress, lawmakers needed to "lay down a marker" and start passing legislation, such as the Keystone XL pipeline, Viguerie said. Should President Barack Obama veto the bill, they could then "brand him as an obstructionist" and label him as a "big government" Democrat.

"Now that the government seems to be doing nothing right — the Veterans Administration, Obamacare, the economy, national security — now to brand the Democrats as the government party will work strongly to the benefit of the Republicans and the conservatives," he said.

Republican leaders could also show "backbone" if they opposed Obama's amnesty plan, Viguerie suggested, because "the grassroots (conservatives) and Americans are so strongly opposed to this."

Viguerie is the author of "Takeover: The 100-Year War for the Soul of the GOP and How Conservatives Can Finally Win", which supports the idea of limited government and constitutional conservatism.
