Ex-Defense Official Richard Perle: Trump Will Be Tough on Putin

President-elect Donald Trump is more likely to get tough with Russian President Vladimir Putin than President Barack Obama has over the past eight years, Richard Perle, a former assistant secretary of defense, told Newsmax TV.

"Despite the fact Donald Trump was accused of being too close to the Russians because he said Putin was a strong leader, I think there's a better chance Donald Trump will stand up to Putin than there certainly was that the current president would do it – or that Hillary [Clinton] would do it," Perle told Thursday's "America Talks Live" host Steve Malzberg.

"Putin's pretty much had a free hand. We have been solicitous toward him, toward his views, toward his policies. I think that will stop.

"Whatever Trump believes about Putin being a strong leader, I believe in the end he will be focused on American interests, and there is a clear clash there. I don't believe he's going to allow Putin to run all over the U.S. as he's been doing."

Perle, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, also criticized the Obama administration for sending delegates to attend the funeral of former Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

"It's inappropriate for the United States to send a mourner to the funeral of a tyrant . . . [It is] not recognizing the lives that have been destroyed by this man," Perle said.

Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes and Jeffrey DeLaurentis, who heads the U.S. diplomatic mission in Havana, will represent the U.S.
