Former U.S. Ambassador to Germany Ric Grenell lambasted the new administration for what he characterized as a snub of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, suggesting on Newsmax TV that President Joe Biden's failure to place a call to the Mideast ally was an attempt to influence the country's upcoming election.
"It's terrible; it's unexplainable; it is wrong; I can't even imagine what they're thinking," Grenell told Tuesday's "Spicer & Co." "What is [National Security Adviser] Jake Sullivan thinking? Why in the world are we not calling our ally, the leader of the county.
"Could it be that there is an election and they're trying to play politics with the election? There were some reports that we've seen never-Trumpers working for other candidates in Israel. This is really too much."
Grenell, who also served as acting director of national intelligence, dismissed suggestions the Biden administration was not snubbing Netanyahu ahead of the March 23 election in Israel. He implied the Trump's administration's success in getting Israel's Arab neighbors to reach peace accords with the Jewish state, known collectively as the Abraham Accords, could be at risk.
"I don't buy it," Grenell said, referring to the Biden's administration claim it was not ignoring Israel. "They're saying they're not snubbing him. Well pick up the phone and call the ally, within the first 30 days. You don't have time? [Biden] was playing Mario Kart out at Camp David.
"Why don't you dial back some of your game playing and spend five minutes on the phone with the leader of a country that is our greatest ally in the Middle East."
