Michael Reagan: Tillerson Has Shorter 'Learning Curve' Than Most

The learning curve for any new Cabinet member is steep – but it will be much less so for President-elect Donald Trump's Secretary of State nominee Rex Tillerson "because he knows all the players" on the world stage, Michael Reagan told Newsmax TV.

The Exxon Mobil CEO – who has come under fire for his ties to Russia's President Vladimir Putin – is "going to be working with a lot of despots all over the world," Reagan, the political commentator and son of the late President Ronald Reagan, told host J.D. Hayworth on Tuesday's "Newsmax Prime."

"Once you take that job as secretary of state or secretary of energy or secretary of anything, there's a learning curve," he said. "And with Tillerson . . . he's not going to have to be in that learning curve too long because he knows all the players that he's going to be . . . speaking with as secretary of state."

Still, Reagan said, "there should be some tough questions put forward about Russia, about that relationship."

"But it comes down to it, it's not about friendship," he said. "That comes later. The first thing we you have to do is gain respect, and if Putin doesn't respect you – bar the door, Sally – it could be over."

Reagan said Trump is precisely the leader the nation needs to "handle all these debts and deficits that we're running. "

"We finally elect a businessman, should we be surprised that he is nominating people who are as successful as he is to be in positions of power to try and bring it all together?" he asked. "Why not give the businessman his chance to do what he says he wants to do . . . and quit griping about the appointees?"

But, he conceded, the media is "going to want to do everything they can to unseat him and make sure he's only a four-year president."

"The Republican Party needs to have patience," Reagan said, recalling his own father's tax break in 1981 took three years to "kick in" and help vault him to a second term.
