Republicans are bailing on their support of just-indicted Rep. Chris Collins, R-N.Y., to avoid the stench of scandal as the midterm elections approach, veteran political commentator Michael Regan told Newsmax TV on Thursday.

"They don't want to get close this guy with November election coming up, surround themselves around a guy who's just been indicted," Reagan told Miranda Khan and John Cardillo on Thursday's "America Talks Live."

Collins – who is running for re-election – and his son Cameron, were hit Wednesday with insider trading charges related to Innate Immunotherapeutics. An early supporter of President Donald Trump, Collins came under fire last year for investing in the Australian biotech firm while on a House committee overseeing healthcare policy.

The indictment alleges the 68-year-old lawmaker tipped off his son about clinical trial results for a drug to treat multiple sclerosis, information not available to the public.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., kicked Collins off the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Collins calls the charges "meritless," is not resigning, and plans to continue his re-election campaign.

"I looked at the dictionary this morning, looked up 'swamp,' and [there] was a picture of Chris Collins next to [it]," said Reagan, tongue planted in cheek.

Reagan is the author of "Lessons My Father Taught Me: The Strength, Integrity, and Faith of Ronald Reagan," written with Jim Denney and published by Humanix Books.
